Mary Church<\/strong><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>Among the red berries that came to find, there were: the &#8220;<em>Bagnarota palizzitana<\/em>&#8221; and the &#8220;<em>Forestera<\/em>&#8221; both with elegant clusters tending to blue, the &#8220;<em>Lacrima nera<\/em>&#8220;, the &#8220;<em>Nerello guarnaccia<\/em>&#8221; and the Ligante palizzitano; there was no lack of whites, such as: the &#8220;<em>Mantonico<\/em>&#8220;, the &#8220;<em>Occhjiu i lepru<\/em>&#8220;, the \u201c<em>Malvasia dall&#8217;acino\u201d<\/em> from the thick skin, &#8220;<em>the Inzolia Tunda<\/em>&#8220;, the &#8220;<em>Zibbibbo<\/em>&#8220;, the &#8220;<em>Moscatello<\/em>&#8221; and the &#8220;<em>Nigrazza<\/em>&#8221; which was one of the most important black grapes among so called &#8220;<em>Nerelli<\/em>&#8220;.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large is-resized\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"621\" height=\"351\" src=\"http:\/\/smaf-ltd.com\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/11\/Palizzi-Bagnarota-Palizzana.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-2947\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.smaf-ltd.com\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/11\/Palizzi-Bagnarota-Palizzana.jpg 621w, https:\/\/www.smaf-ltd.com\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/11\/Palizzi-Bagnarota-Palizzana-300x170.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 621px) 100vw, 621px\" \/><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\"><strong>Bagnarota Palizzana Grape<\/strong><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>These wineyards, now at risk of\ngenetic erosion, gave strength and fragrance to the red wine of Palizzi and\nproduced medium-small bunches with berries covered with bloom, a substance\nfound on the berries, and which prevented the sun from dehydrating the grapes\ndespite the hot summer days characterized the area. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>HISTORY<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In the 50s of the last century, mass\nemigration depopulated the territory, the fields were abandoned and the\nvineyards disappeared. A &#8220;character&#8221;, still alive, <em>Baron Harimberg<\/em>, a German officer who\ntook refuge in Palizzi and married little <em>Baroness\nDe Blasio<\/em>, during the retreat of the Nazi troops after the Americans landed\nin Sicily, continued the wine production. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Thanks to them, currently, in\naddition to <em>Nerelli<\/em> and <em>Inzolia<\/em>, international and national\ngrape varieties are planted such as <em>Nero\nd&#8217;Avola<\/em> or <em>Calabrese<\/em>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>At the beginning of the twentieth century the vine-dressers were not able to fight <em>powdery mildew<\/em>, a fungus with a disastrous impact that attacked all the wine production. This is why the Sicilians arrived and with their expertise intervened with the use of sulfur against the fearsome disease, which had attacked the vineyards, obtaining half of the product for this. It was during these campaigns that the Sicilians identified Palizzi as a vine of excellence that they brought to Sicily &#8230;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The territory in which it is produced and history, let us understand clearly the strength of this wine, due to the victories it has achieved over time; and still today its flavor can be tasted while savoring a wild boar dish with onions and leek or a goat ragu, or game with red fruit sauce, typical dishes of Calabrian territory.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"1024\" height=\"680\" src=\"http:\/\/smaf-ltd.com\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/11\/Palizzi-city-of-wine-1024x680.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-2948\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.smaf-ltd.com\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/11\/Palizzi-city-of-wine-1024x680.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/www.smaf-ltd.com\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/11\/Palizzi-city-of-wine-300x199.jpg 300w, https:\/\/www.smaf-ltd.com\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/11\/Palizzi-city-of-wine-768x510.jpg 768w, https:\/\/www.smaf-ltd.com\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/11\/Palizzi-city-of-wine-640x425.jpg 640w, https:\/\/www.smaf-ltd.com\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/11\/Palizzi-city-of-wine.jpg 1280w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 1024px) 100vw, 1024px\" \/><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\"><strong>Palizzi, City of Wine<\/strong><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>FEATURES OF THE WINE<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Palizzi<\/strong> is a\nwine protected with Typical Geographical Indication (IGT), whose production is\nallowed in the province of Reggio Calabria.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><em><strong>Organoleptic characteristics:<\/strong><\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><em>Color<\/em>:\nintense red tending to garnet.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><em>Smell<\/em>: the\nbouquet is vinous, with an important and enveloping structure.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><em>Taste<\/em>: dry\nand austere.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><em>Background: <\/em>The\naristocrat Palizzi was born from the lower Ionian coast in the Greek speaking\narea in the province of Reggio Calabria, at an altitude of about 250 m a.s.l.,\nand from a clay soil structure. It is one of the most renowned red wines of\nCalabrian viticulture. Harvest in the second decade of September; after\ncrushing, the grapes ferment in steel tanks for 48\/60 hours, then they are\npressed and the must placed in steel tanks at a controlled temperature, where\nit will remain until the first racking in November. The highest altitudes at which grapes are harvested, thanks to the quality of the soil are Pietrapennata and Palizzi Superiore.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The Palizzi vineyards are not numerous but are selected from those of the best quality and most productive. For wines with a typical geographical indication &#8220;Palizzi&#8221;, the maximum production of grapes per hectare of vineyard, in specialized cultivation, must not exceed 11 tons \/ hectare. The product\nwill be left in a steel tank until November when the decanting will take place.\nAt the end of the process the new wine is left to rest for two months in\nchestnut wood barrels and it is bottled only 18 months after the beginning of\nthe harvest.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>According to some studies at the end of fermentation, the right alcohol content that the wine must reach is 14 degrees. Apart from the marina, the other villages do not count more than 200 inhabitants each. The <em>Marina of Palizzi<\/em> is one of the main beach destinations for the inhabitants of the area and where you can stay overnight in different B &amp; Bs and camping. Inevitable will be the famous &#8220;<em>Vino di Palizzi<\/em>&#8220;, strong and full-bodied. It will make you sweat on the hottest nights of summer but your neurons, along with the taste buds, will convince you that it will be worth it anyway, even better if your evening will end up on a beach next to a fire and a guitar . The sound of the sea breaking on the shore is the best acoustic accompaniment to dispose of a drink of that wine with historic origins.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Finally, it is over 10 years that it\nis possible to rediscover the old places and the old forms of wine production.\nThanks to various projects aimed at enhancing this local product, Palizzi has\nbecome the \u201ccity of wine\u201d.
