{"id":2921,"date":"2019-12-01T08:28:00","date_gmt":"2019-12-01T08:28:00","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/smaf-ltd.com\/wordpress\/?p=2921"},"modified":"2024-12-21T21:37:35","modified_gmt":"2024-12-21T21:37:35","slug":"moscato-wine-of-saracena-and-guarnaccia-white-vine","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.smaf-ltd.com\/wordpress\/moscato-wine-of-saracena-and-guarnaccia-white-vine\/","title":{"rendered":"Moscato wine of Saracena and &#8220;Guarnaccia&#8221; white vine"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p>1.12.2019<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Let&#8217;s know a little the white grape\nthat in the area of the Calabrian Pollino finds its greatest diffusion: White <strong>Guarnaccia<\/strong> <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>It is protagonist together with the\ngrapes <em>Malvasia<\/em>, <em>Addoraca<\/em> and <em>Muscatel<\/em> of\nthe ancient <strong>Moscato di Saracena wine<\/strong>,\nwhich today is vinified in purity by some young wineries expressing in this way\nall its characteristics. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>However, this native vine, <em>Guarnaccia<\/em>, gives us beautiful surprises. This white grape for centuries has found a good spread in the territory between the municipalities of <em>Verbicaro<\/em>, <em>Altomonte<\/em> and <em>Saracena<\/em> (Cosenza), in the southernmost part of the Pollino National Park. But now, it s becoming very famous due to the terrific white &#8220;<em>Moscato di Saracena<\/em>&#8221; wine.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"1024\" height=\"330\" src=\"http:\/\/smaf-ltd.com\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/11\/Guarnaccia-vines-2-1024x330.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-2927\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.smaf-ltd.com\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/11\/Guarnaccia-vines-2-1024x330.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/www.smaf-ltd.com\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/11\/Guarnaccia-vines-2-300x97.jpg 300w, https:\/\/www.smaf-ltd.com\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/11\/Guarnaccia-vines-2-768x248.jpg 768w, https:\/\/www.smaf-ltd.com\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/11\/Guarnaccia-vines-2-1536x495.jpg 1536w, https:\/\/www.smaf-ltd.com\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/11\/Guarnaccia-vines-2-640x206.jpg 640w, https:\/\/www.smaf-ltd.com\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/11\/Guarnaccia-vines-2.jpg 1848w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 1024px) 100vw, 1024px\" \/><figcaption><strong>Pollino Hills and Guarnaccia vines<\/strong><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>THE FAMOUS MOSCATO DI SARACENA<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Together with Malvasia, Addoraca and Moscatello, the <strong>white Guarnaccia<\/strong> is used for the production of Moscato in the territory of <strong>Saracena<\/strong>. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>It is a very special and unique\ndessert wine that today is a Slow Food Presidium. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The name suggests a Spanish origin (like the red berry &#8220;<em>garnacha<\/em>&#8221; known in Italy with many names, the best known of which is <em>cannonau<\/em>), but the white Guarnaccia is also widespread in Campania (mainly on the island of Ischia and in the province of Naples) and in Lazio. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"1024\" height=\"455\" src=\"http:\/\/smaf-ltd.com\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/11\/Guarnaccia-Saracena.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-2926\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.smaf-ltd.com\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/11\/Guarnaccia-Saracena.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/www.smaf-ltd.com\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/11\/Guarnaccia-Saracena-300x133.jpg 300w, https:\/\/www.smaf-ltd.com\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/11\/Guarnaccia-Saracena-768x341.jpg 768w, https:\/\/www.smaf-ltd.com\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/11\/Guarnaccia-Saracena-640x284.jpg 640w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 1024px) 100vw, 1024px\" \/><figcaption><strong>The village of Saracena<\/strong><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>Anyway, even if there is no clear historical information on its origin, anyway, it is thought that the origin is Hellenic, that the vine arrived during the period of Greek colonization; it also seems that this particular white berry variety grown in Calabria comes from neighboring Sicily, where it currently seems to have completely disappeared.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>THE VARIETY OF THE &#8220;BLACK&#8221; GUARNACCIA<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The <strong>Black grape variety<\/strong> of <em>Guarnaccia<\/em>\nis widespread in the same territories as the white one and is thought to have\nthe same origin; cultivation lands are also similar. The bunch is medium-sized,\nconical, compact, often winged, the grape is medium, spherical, with a thick,\nmedium pruinose black skin.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The black variety is a red grape variety of which there is no certain news, with a name that provides more confusion than certainty, since it leads to think of a sub-type of the French &#8220;<em>grenache<\/em>&#8220;.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"1024\" height=\"683\" src=\"http:\/\/smaf-ltd.com\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/11\/Guarnaccia-black-1024x683.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-2925\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.smaf-ltd.com\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/11\/Guarnaccia-black-1024x683.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/www.smaf-ltd.com\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/11\/Guarnaccia-black-300x200.jpg 300w, https:\/\/www.smaf-ltd.com\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/11\/Guarnaccia-black-768x512.jpg 768w, https:\/\/www.smaf-ltd.com\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/11\/Guarnaccia-black-640x427.jpg 640w, https:\/\/www.smaf-ltd.com\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/11\/Guarnaccia-black.jpg 1200w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 1024px) 100vw, 1024px\" \/><figcaption><strong>Black Guarnaccia<\/strong><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>However, no DNA test has confirmed\nthis hypothesis, although many <em>ampelography<\/em>\n<em>scholars<\/em> consider it valid, while\nothers prefer to hypothesize a native origin, even if not identified with any\nterritory. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>No historical document can clarify\nthe origin of the grape, and it can also be considered that like many vines,\nespecially in the south of Italy, it may be one of the many grapes imported\nfrom Greece at the time of Hellenic colonization in the 7th century BC.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>This hypothesis is supported by the spread of the grape variety, concentrated above all on the Campania coast, on the island of Ischia and as a leopard spot in Calabria. GUARNACCIA<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The <strong>white<\/strong> <em>Guarnaccia<\/em> is a\nvigorous vine at medium maturation (in the third decade of September).<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In the vineyard it shows a beautiful\nmedium-sized bunch, long, conical, simple or with a wing, medium compact; it\nhas a medium berry, from spherical to short ellipsoidal, with visible\numbilicus, a skin of color that varies from green-whitish to amber-yellow, very\npruinose; its pulp is juicy, with a pleasant taste similar to <em>muscat<\/em>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The characters found in the\naforementioned vineyard were subsequently compared with those of the grape\ncultivated in the area of <strong>Castrovillari<\/strong>\n(province of Cosenza) and with the clones of the ampelographic collection of\nthe state technical agricultural institute of Catania. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The outcome was that white <em>guarnaccia<\/em> is officially foreseen in the Calabrian disciplinary of the DOP wines called &#8220;<em>Terre di Cosenza<\/em>&#8220;, &#8220;<em>Pollino<\/em>&#8221; and &#8220;<em>Verbicaro<\/em>&#8220;, but is also present in those wine of the IGTs protection in the territories of <em>Palizzi, Locride, Arghill\u00e0, Pellaro, Scilla, Costa Viola<\/em> (in the province of Reggio Calabria), <em>Valdamato<\/em> (in the province of Catanzaro), <em>Lipuda <\/em>and<em> Val di Neto<\/em> (in the province of Crotone).<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"1000\" height=\"510\" src=\"http:\/\/smaf-ltd.com\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/11\/Guarnaccia-vines.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-2929\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.smaf-ltd.com\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/11\/Guarnaccia-vines.jpg 1000w, https:\/\/www.smaf-ltd.com\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/11\/Guarnaccia-vines-300x153.jpg 300w, https:\/\/www.smaf-ltd.com\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/11\/Guarnaccia-vines-768x392.jpg 768w, https:\/\/www.smaf-ltd.com\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/11\/Guarnaccia-vines-640x326.jpg 640w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 1000px) 100vw, 1000px\" \/><figcaption><strong>Guarnaccia Vineyards at Sunset<\/strong><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>In assembly with other grapes, as said,\nthe white <em>guarnaccia<\/em> is the\nprotagonist of the rare and special <strong>Moscato\ndi Saracena<\/strong>. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The rare wine produces has a\nvinification in purity, which gives raise to a straw yellow elixir with elegant\nfloral, fruity, herbaceous and mineral aromas, intense and full-bodied, of good\nfreshness and acidity.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Further, from centuries-old\nvineyards grown in the <strong>Firmo<\/strong> area\n(Cs) at about 350 meters above sea level, the white must of the white <em>guarnaccia<\/em> ferments spontaneously in\nstainless steel tanks: here a golden wine is born, with a soft but fresh taste\nwith distinctly floral hints such as&nbsp;
