There is also the red berry variety, but it is not very common. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image is-resized\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"500\" height=\"380\" src=\"http:\/\/smaf-ltd.com\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/11\/mantonico-4.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-2893\" style=\"width:656px;height:499px\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.smaf-ltd.com\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/11\/mantonico-4.jpg 500w, https:\/\/www.smaf-ltd.com\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/11\/mantonico-4-300x228.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 500px) 100vw, 500px\" \/><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\"><strong> The rare red acinus variety <\/strong><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>The Mantonico has its ideal habitat\nin some areas of southern Calabria: its greatest spread is recorded along the\nIonian coast, where it covers a total area of about 45 hectares, distributed\nmainly in the municipalities of <em>Palizzi<\/em>,\n<em>Casignana<\/em>, <em>Locri<\/em> (where in dialect it is called <em>Mantonacu viru<\/em> that is &#8220;true Mantonico&#8221;, to differentiate\nit from other similar varieties) and <em>Monasterace<\/em>,\nall in the province of Reggio Calabria, but also dates back to the Crotone, in\nthe Valle del Neto and in the Marquisate.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>These are hilly areas particularly\nsuited to viticulture, with their calcareous-clayey soils and the Mediterranean\nclimate mitigated by sea breezes.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In the past, <em>sapling <\/em>cultivation was preferred; today, <em>spurred cordon <\/em>cultivation was widespread; once the Mantonico was mainly intended for export as a table grape, especially towards Northern Europe. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>FEATURES<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The bunches are stocky and of medium size, while acinus are medium in size, ellipsoid, regular, with a sweet and acidulous taste at the same time, with a resistant and tannic peel of greenish yellow color, but which arrive at late maturation with a beautiful golden yellow. These characteristics have favored the use of the ancient technique of drying the grapes on racks before proceeding with the vinification, thus obtaining a sweet and concentrated nectar, as happens with the Greco di Bianco. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Thus was born another &#8220;<em>meditation wine<\/em>&#8220;, of a golden\nyellow with amber reflections, with intense notes of flowers, candied fruit\n(apricot, citrus), honey and dried fruit, delicious on the palate, fresh,\nsavory and velvety. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Excellent at the end of a meal together with aged cheeses or dry pastry desserts, such as <em>mostaccioli<\/em>. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image is-resized\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"520\" height=\"346\" src=\"http:\/\/smaf-ltd.com\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/11\/mantonico-3.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-2891\" style=\"width:662px;height:440px\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.smaf-ltd.com\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/11\/mantonico-3.jpg 520w, https:\/\/www.smaf-ltd.com\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/11\/mantonico-3-300x200.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 520px) 100vw, 520px\" \/><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\"> <strong>Vineyard<\/strong> <strong>on Ionian Coast<\/strong> <\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>Another Calabrian enological pearl\nthat has recently been revalued and enhanced not only in the passito version\nbut also in the dry version. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>If it is dry vinified (which happens\nin very few wineries), it produces a wine with a pale yellow color, but with\nfine and elegant floral hints, fruity citrus, peach.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>24.11.2019 If you think to a wine believed to confer divinatory powers to whom drinks it, then this is that white nectar called &#8220;Mantonico&#8220;, a white wine coming from&nbsp; a rare native vine of Calabria.
