{"id":2683,"date":"2019-10-06T07:26:57","date_gmt":"2019-10-06T07:26:57","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/smaf-ltd.com\/wordpress\/?p=2683"},"modified":"2024-12-18T12:19:43","modified_gmt":"2024-12-18T12:19:43","slug":"oenology-of-ciro-the-star-of-calabrian-wines","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.smaf-ltd.com\/wordpress\/oenology-of-ciro-the-star-of-calabrian-wines\/","title":{"rendered":"Oenology of Cir\u00f2: the star of Calabrian wines"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p>6.10.2019<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>HISTORY OF VITICULTURE IN CALABRIA<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>It is not possible to give a complete guide on the history of vines and grapes in Calabria, this history is so full of stories, details, discoveries, that it is easier understand its legacy than understand all the profound assets, present in the wine making.<br> Contrary to the belief that the vine was imported to Europe from &#8216;the Far East, many fossil finds in northern Europe and the Mediterranean regions show that since the beginning of the Tertiary appeared in Europe plants belonging to the botanical species &#8220;<strong><em>Vitis<\/em><\/strong>&#8221; , the ancestors of modern &#8220;<strong><em>Vines<\/em><\/strong>&#8221; European. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"780\" height=\"768\" src=\"http:\/\/smaf-ltd.com\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/10\/Oenology-Vitis-Vinifera.gif\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-2696\"\/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p><br> The fossil record shows us very different plants by modern life, diversity due to climate changes that occurred during the Eocene geological eras, Miocene and Pliocene. Only during the Pliocene begin to appear vines like those presenting today as <strong><em>Vitis Praevinifera Saporta<\/em><\/strong> and <strong><em>Vitis Subintegra Saporta. <\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image is-resized\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"541\" height=\"541\" src=\"http:\/\/smaf-ltd.com\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/09\/Oenology-Vitis-saporta-65-milioni.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-2697\" style=\"width:667px;height:667px\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.smaf-ltd.com\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/09\/Oenology-Vitis-saporta-65-milioni.jpg 541w, https:\/\/www.smaf-ltd.com\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/09\/Oenology-Vitis-saporta-65-milioni-150x150.jpg 150w, https:\/\/www.smaf-ltd.com\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/09\/Oenology-Vitis-saporta-65-milioni-300x300.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 541px) 100vw, 541px\" \/><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\"><strong>&#8220;Vitis&#8221; (Cretacic period, 65 Million of years ago<\/strong>)<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>The\nfindings grape seeds dating back to Neolithic times, make us believe that the\nEuropean man used the grapes in his diet.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>During the Bronze Age have been found in Italy only traces of wild grape, the &#8220;<em><strong>Vitis Vinifera Silvestris<\/strong><\/em>&#8221; and this excludes the possibility that at that time the man would dedicate to growing grapes.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The first\ntraces of vine growing for the purpose of wine production found themselves\naround 2000 years ago in Calabria and Sicily. A Crimissa Philoctetes built a shrine in honor of <em>Apollus Aleo<\/em>, who had healed from the bite of a snake washing his wound with wine. In the area of the cult <em>Dionysus<\/em>, protector of the screw and of the trees, and expanded rapidly in his honor they took place celebrations in which consumed large amounts of Crimissa wine. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Further, legend has it that during the <strong>Olympic Games<\/strong> that were held in Greece, was offered the Cir\u00f2 wine to the winning athletes. The Ciro wine is now produced in the same places where once stood the city of Crimissa.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"590\" height=\"290\" src=\"http:\/\/smaf-ltd.com\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/09\/Oenology-Roman-empire.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-2699\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.smaf-ltd.com\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/09\/Oenology-Roman-empire.jpg 590w, https:\/\/www.smaf-ltd.com\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/09\/Oenology-Roman-empire-300x147.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 590px) 100vw, 590px\" \/><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\"><strong>The emperor Marcus Aurelius<\/strong><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>VITICULTURE IN ROMAN TIMES<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The vine\nwas considered a sacred plant by the Greeks and Romans, and in the regions of\nsouthern Italy viticulture never ceased to flourish. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Following the expansion of the <strong>Empire and the Roman dominion <\/strong>over the Mediterranean territories, between the fifth and third centuries BC, the rural economy and especially viticulture, underwent profound transformations. Large imports of grain from the new provinces of the empire created a drop in demand and, consequently, a sharp drop in the value of the wheat produced in Italy. Therefore, the large landowners began to revise their agricultural strategies and so the cultivation of vines became one of the agricultural activities more &#8216;practiced and profitable.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"640\" height=\"479\" src=\"http:\/\/smaf-ltd.com\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/09\/Oenology-Roman-empire-2.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-2700\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.smaf-ltd.com\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/09\/Oenology-Roman-empire-2.jpg 640w, https:\/\/www.smaf-ltd.com\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/09\/Oenology-Roman-empire-2-300x225.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 640px) 100vw, 640px\" \/><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\"><strong>Caesar<\/strong><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>The Romans with the help of Greek and Asian slaves perfected the viticulture and enology. The goodness of Italian wine became well known and his fame opened the way for exports of wine products. Around 1200 the wine began to be exported to Europe and its use spread so widely that the church found it necessary to take severe measures against alcoholism to the point that, in 1215,<em> Pope Innocent III <\/em>proclaimed drunkenness as a serious offense.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>THE &#8220;MODERN&#8221; (a European grapevine), it was then necessary have an<em> <strong>American root <\/strong><\/em>(resistant to phylloxera), on which was later grafted the European grapevine.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The practices of viticulture then began to be based on new farming concepts, otherwise the vines could not resist the terrible attacks of new enemies, microscopic and relentless.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image is-resized\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"500\" height=\"262\" src=\"http:\/\/smaf-ltd.com\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/04\/Ciro-Gaglioppo.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-2114\" style=\"width:669px;height:351px\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.smaf-ltd.com\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/04\/Ciro-Gaglioppo.jpg 500w, https:\/\/www.smaf-ltd.com\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/04\/Ciro-Gaglioppo-300x157.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 500px) 100vw, 500px\" \/><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\"><strong>Greek Gaglioppo grape<\/strong><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>The vineyards of Cir\u00f2 were therefore uprooted and replanted using imported from screws, which were used as &#8220;rootstocks&#8221;, on which were grafted the native varieties of <strong>Greek<\/strong> <strong>Gaglioppo<\/strong> and <strong>White<\/strong>, which are the varieties still used today to produce the best wine Cir\u00f2 &#8220;DOC&#8221;
