Among the predatory mammals, the <strong>Wolf<\/strong> appears in the first place and is present in the Park with few exemplars. In the meadows and at high altitude there are the <strong>Hare<\/strong>, the <strong>Beech marten<\/strong>, the <strong>Weasel<\/strong>, the <strong>Dormouse<\/strong>, and the very rare Calabrian <strong>Forest dormouse<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The <strong>Squirrel<\/strong> that has had a good reproduction in recent years is easy to find in the forests of <em>Beech tree<\/em>, <em>Fir<\/em> and in the reforestation pine forests.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image is-resized\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/smaf-ltd.com\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/09\/Pollino-Black-Squirrel.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-2571\" width=\"666\" height=\"395\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.smaf-ltd.com\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/09\/Pollino-Black-Squirrel.jpg 480w, https:\/\/www.smaf-ltd.com\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/09\/Pollino-Black-Squirrel-300x178.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 666px) 100vw, 666px\" \/><figcaption><strong>Pollino&#8217;s Black Squirrel<\/strong><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>NATURE: FLOWERS AND\nOFFICINAL HERBS OF THE PARK<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The Pollino Park enjoys the variability of some\nenvironmental factors and this allows the development of different plant\nspecies. The <strong>Mediterranean maquis<\/strong>,\nabove all present in the warmer areas, is mainly composed of Laurel, Cistus\nfemale, Arbutus, Erica, Phillyrea, lentiscus and Rosemary. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>At high altitudes there are mainly <strong>Oak, Chestnut, Maple <\/strong>and<strong> Hornbeam Trees<\/strong>. At 1,200 meters, beech dominates, which is the most widespread plant in the Park and there are different types depending on the height. On some slopes there is a mixture of <strong>Beech<\/strong> and <strong>Silver Fir.<\/strong> Between 900 and 1850 meters or even at lower altitudes there are special beech associations. In a small clearing on the edge of the Acquafredda plain, a group of beech trees offers a spectacle that really leaves tourists stunned. In time, a group of these trees took on a twisted shape, so much so that they are called &#8220;<em>snake trees<\/em>&#8220;.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"1024\" height=\"832\" src=\"http:\/\/smaf-ltd.com\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/09\/Pollino-Quercia-1024x832.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-2574\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.smaf-ltd.com\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/09\/Pollino-Quercia.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/www.smaf-ltd.com\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/09\/Pollino-Quercia-300x244.jpg 300w, https:\/\/www.smaf-ltd.com\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/09\/Pollino-Quercia-768x624.jpg 768w, https:\/\/www.smaf-ltd.com\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/09\/Pollino-Quercia-640x520.jpg 640w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 1024px) 100vw, 1024px\" \/><figcaption><strong>Oak in Pollino Park<\/strong><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>Among the tree species are the <strong>Black Pine, <\/strong>the<strong> Badger, <\/strong>the<strong> Holly, <\/strong>and\nthe<strong> Maple<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The <strong>Silver\nFir<\/strong>, on the other hand, grows only in certain points on the massif,\nespecially in the northern slope, in the Bosco Iannace. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The majestic <strong>Pinus heldreichii<\/strong> (&#8220;<strong>Loricato<\/strong>&#8220;, meaning &#8220;armored&#8221;), witness of the geological history (it can lives more the 1,000 years) of the Park is a precious Balkan element. This Pinus is the most important species of the Pollino Park an important presence is found above all in the Orsomarso mountains, on the Alps, and on the La Spina mountain, and is the symbol of the Park. The Pine, so called &#8220;Loricato&#8221;, lives above the vegetation belt, has a very slow growth and adapts to any weather condition. Its bark is characterized by large polygonal-shaped gray-ash plates that almost resemble an armor, hence the Italian name \u2018Loricato\u2019. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"800\" height=\"534\" src=\"http:\/\/smaf-ltd.com\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/09\/Pollino-Pino-Loricato.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-2575\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.smaf-ltd.com\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/09\/Pollino-Pino-Loricato.jpg 800w, https:\/\/www.smaf-ltd.com\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/09\/Pollino-Pino-Loricato-300x200.jpg 300w, https:\/\/www.smaf-ltd.com\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/09\/Pollino-Pino-Loricato-768x513.jpg 768w, https:\/\/www.smaf-ltd.com\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/09\/Pollino-Pino-Loricato-640x427.jpg 640w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 800px) 100vw, 800px\" \/><figcaption><strong>Pine <\/strong><em><strong>Loricato<\/strong><\/em><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>Below one thousand meters we find <strong>Neapolitan Alder, Lobel Maple, White Hornbeam and Black Hornbeam<\/strong>. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In the Bosco Mascagnano it is possible to\nadmire an interesting association of <strong>Turkey\nOak, Beech And Black Hornbeam<\/strong>. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Along the rivers are the <strong>Black Poplar<\/strong> and the <strong>Black Alder<\/strong>,\nand among the herbaceous essences the <strong>Maidenhair<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>At low altitude there are <strong>meadows<\/strong> and <strong>woods<\/strong> and <strong>essences<\/strong> typical of the Mediterranean vegetation. Among the\nfruits we find wild <strong>Strawberries,\nRaspberries, Blackberries <\/strong>and<strong> Juniper\nBerries.<\/strong> <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In spring the <strong>flowers<\/strong> offer an indescribable spectacle. The Park&#8217;s main flowers include the <strong>Gentian, <\/strong>the<strong> Narcisio, <\/strong>the<strong> Peony, <\/strong>the splendid<strong> Pollanulas of the Pollino, <\/strong>the<strong> Viola, <\/strong>the<strong> Orchid sambucina, a<\/strong>nd other types of Orchids. There is no shortage of<strong> Polmonaria, <\/strong>and<strong> Sassifraga <\/strong>and among the rarest species, the<strong> Pusatilla Alpina <\/strong>and the <strong>Gallium.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Over the centuries, medicinal plants have helped the human being in various therapies that benefit the human body. Pollino park can be considered the ideal environment for the growth of <strong>medicinal plants<\/strong>. On the\nnorthern slope of the Pollino massif, at 1537 meters above sea level, stands\nthe Sanctuary of the Madonna del Pollino. From 1975 it is possible to reach the\nplace of worship through a comfortable driveway.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>&#8211; Sanctuary of Santa Maria delle Armi in Cerchiara di Calabria<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The Sanctuary of Santa Maria delle Armi is located near Cerchiaria di Calabria (Cs), on the slopes of Mount Sellaro, also known as Monte Santo (1015 m asl).
