{"id":2483,"date":"2019-09-15T08:24:58","date_gmt":"2019-09-15T08:24:58","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/smaf-ltd.com\/wordpress\/?p=2483"},"modified":"2024-12-21T21:40:13","modified_gmt":"2024-12-21T21:40:13","slug":"annona-the-bet-of-new-calabrian-farmers","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.smaf-ltd.com\/wordpress\/annona-the-bet-of-new-calabrian-farmers\/","title":{"rendered":"Annona, the bet of New Calabrian Farmers"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p>15.9.2019<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Calabria\nwants to focus (also) on the exotic fruits and young farmers take the field. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The <strong>Annona Atemoya<\/strong> has a glossy skin rich\nin tapered but not pointed growths<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In recent\nyears, mainly due to climate change, alongside the crops that have always\ncharacterized the fruit and vegetable sector of the peninsula, crops of Annona\nare becoming increasingly popular that until recently were rather rare or even\nunknown.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>According to a study by Coldiretti, its cultivar has gone from a few hectares planted with tropical fruits to over five hundred hectares, with an increase of sixty times in just five years. All thanks above all to the commitment of young farmers who have recovered abandoned land precisely because of climate change and have decided to meet new tastes and new eating habits for consumers.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"725\" height=\"489\" src=\"http:\/\/smaf-ltd.com\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/08\/Annona-1.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-2488\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.smaf-ltd.com\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/08\/Annona-1.jpg 725w, https:\/\/www.smaf-ltd.com\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/08\/Annona-1-300x202.jpg 300w, https:\/\/www.smaf-ltd.com\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/08\/Annona-1-640x432.jpg 640w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 725px) 100vw, 725px\" \/><figcaption><strong>Annona, variety &#8220;Hybrid&#8221;<\/strong><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>And if in\nSicily, among others, mangoes and avocados can be found, in Calabria it is the\nannona, a fruit originating in Central and South America, to spread over many\nareas cultivated in the Tyrrhenian area of Reggio Calabria. And it is precisely\nin the latter area, to be precise in <strong>Fiumara<\/strong>,\nin the province of <strong>Reggio Calabria<\/strong>,\nnew farmers have decided to seize the opportunity.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>FEATURES<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The annona\nis a fruit originating in Central and South America<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>As already\nspecified, being a fruit of tropical origin the ideal climate for the growth\nand maturation of the fruit is the Mediterranean one. However, after several\nattempts made in other regions of Southern Italy, it has been shown that only\nand exclusively in the the coast of Reggio Calabria finds the best habitat.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>And as regards the characteristics of the soil, the fruit mainly requires medium-textured soils with a prevalent percentage of sand and silt.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"1024\" height=\"683\" src=\"http:\/\/smaf-ltd.com\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/08\/Annona-prima-1024x683.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-2489\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.smaf-ltd.com\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/08\/Annona-prima-1024x683.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/www.smaf-ltd.com\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/08\/Annona-prima-300x200.jpg 300w, https:\/\/www.smaf-ltd.com\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/08\/Annona-prima-768x512.jpg 768w, https:\/\/www.smaf-ltd.com\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/08\/Annona-prima-640x427.jpg 640w, https:\/\/www.smaf-ltd.com\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/08\/Annona-prima.jpg 1200w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 1024px) 100vw, 1024px\" \/><figcaption><strong> Annona, variety &#8220;cherimola&#8221;<\/strong><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>Belonging to the <em>Annonaceae <\/em>family, the annona is a fruit tree with an expanded and slow-growing habit that usually reaches four to six meters in height as an adult. It has slight branches of gray-brown color with elliptical, alternate, light green leaves.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The\nflowering starts in the spring immediately after the fall of the leaves and is\nscalar (until July-August). The flowers appear small, greenish-white and\nfragrant, usually hermaphrodite in groups of two \/ three. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>It requires\nentomophilous fertilization through small insects, or pollination is carried\nout by small insects.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The fruit\nis mature when it is slightly soft to the touch and begins to show light brown\nstreaks.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The fruit\nhas a soft and creamy white-cream flesh with high sugar content, the presence\nof numerous seeds (variable depending on the species) and has a sudden ripening\nafter harvest. The average weight of the annona is 210 grams (but it can also\nexceed 900 grams).<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>There are\nthree cultivated varieties: <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>&#8211; <strong>Annona cherimola<\/strong> or <em>Cherimoya<\/em>, <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>&#8211; <strong>Atemoya &#8211; Geffner<\/strong> variety and to a\nlesser extent <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>&#8211; A <strong>local hybrid variety,<\/strong> which over the\ndecades has gradually developed through the crossing of several other\nvarieties.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>While the Annona cherimola is the most valuable and is characterized by a green fruit with a homogeneous cordiform or conical shape, with a very thin skin and medium-depressed homogeneous areoles, the <em>Atemoya &#8211; Geffner <\/em>variety is a hybrid cultivar deriving from the Annona muricata or Annona squamosa and the Annona cherimola. Its peculiarity is that of having a shiny skin rich in slender but not pointed growths.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"1024\" height=\"681\" src=\"http:\/\/smaf-ltd.com\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/08\/Annona2-1024x681.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-2490\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.smaf-ltd.com\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/08\/Annona2-1024x681.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/www.smaf-ltd.com\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/08\/Annona2-300x200.jpg 300w, https:\/\/www.smaf-ltd.com\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/08\/Annona2-768x511.jpg 768w, https:\/\/www.smaf-ltd.com\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/08\/Annona2-640x426.jpg 640w, https:\/\/www.smaf-ltd.com\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/08\/Annona2.jpg 1276w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 1024px) 100vw, 1024px\" \/><figcaption><strong>A delicious pulp<\/strong><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>The taste\nis very different between the various species: the Annona cherimola has hints\nof banana, pineapple, pear, while the Atemoya has strong hints of milk. It\nshould be said &#8211; specific Bell\u00e8 &#8211; that the taste of this fruit is unique is\ndifficult to assimilate to others.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>As for the\nharvest, instead, for the Annona cherimola it is set between September 15th and\nDecember 15th, while for the Atemoya between January 1st and March 15th. The\nharvest is scrupulously done by hand, selecting only the fruits ready for\nconsumption.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The plant is not subject to many pathogenic attacks, the most serious ones are referred to <em>Glomerella <\/em>and <em>Phytophthora <\/em>which mainly affect the fruits in juvenile phase causing rot or mummification. To fight them, it is necessary to eliminate immediately the infected parts and intervene with copper oxychloride.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>GASTRONOMY<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The main\ngastronomic use is direct consumption of the pulp, with a small spoon. The\nfruit is deliciously sweety. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>However, a\nrich jam, that is not a trivial aspect, can be made using freshly picked fruit.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>But it&#8217;s not over here. Another well-played card by young farmers was to make themselves space in the world of ice cream making by participating, among many others, in SIGEP fair (International Gelato, Pastry, Bakery and Coffee) in Rimini in 2018. It is rich in\nvitamins, proteins, minerals, but above all antioxidants.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In addition\nto having an energetic function, it improves the immune defenses, has an\nanti-age effect, protects from infectious agents, helps blood circulation,\nregulates intestinal functions, has relaxing effects and fights numerous\ndiseases.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>15.9.2019 Calabria wants to focus (also) on the exotic fruits and young farmers take the field.
